BEING A SCUBA INSTRUCTOR: A THROUGHFULL INVESTIGATION INTO THIS COMPLEX PROFESSION

Teaching scuba diving, an activity that has existed and has been developing worldwide for several decades already, is far from an easy task.In an environment that evolves chronologically, technologically, geographically, socio-economically, environmentally, etc. the task of the instructor is becoming more and more difficult in comparison to previous years.The instructor is asked to constantly enrich his skills and keep up with a galloping development in terms of technology and theory of diving, to know and be informed about marketing matters, to learn and speak languages with which he will be able to expand the multitude of possibilities of his students and in general to continuously build a strong Curriculum Vitae in the face of the gruelling competition.This need becomes imperative when teaching diving is his main occupation.At the same time, one is required to serve a much more demanding audience, which also comes from all age and social groups and cultures, genders, etc. So, anyone who thinks that teaching diving is an easy task should think again.This publication is addressed to Instructors already certified as well as candidate Instructors. It is based on statistics and professional experience in Instructor Training, both my own (for this reason you will also find many of my personal opinions) and colleagues at an international level.I believe that it could be a good help to the instructor - especially the new - in order to delve deeper into issues related to the practice of our profession.In these pages there are interesting facts, suggestions and exercises that will help the instructor in his understanding of the general environment of his work and will strengthen the way of thinking and approaching of the general topic.
