P&H - Volan 156 Lightweight

A sea kayak sized for lighter paddlers that also happens to be one of the most practical all-round builds in the Volan lineup, the Volan 156 Lightweight hits a sweet spot between weight savings and real-world durability. At around 40 lb, it's easy to handle solo from car to water and back again without saving all your energy for the paddle itself.

The hull delivers the Volan's characteristic balance of straight-line tracking on flat water and responsive edging when conditions invite it. Bow rocker and volume smooth out the ride and keep things dry, while the shaped bow deck manages water shedding and resists purling without any fuss. Bow deck geometry is reinforced for stiffness during deep water rescues, and the low rear deck keeps rolling and re-entry well within reach. The paddle shaft recess provides a dependable brace point on water entries, and large bow and stern hatches plus a day hatch cover everything from a single-day paddle to an overnight run, with an optional bow mini hatch and full deck lines and elastics adding versatility.

The Lightweight layup uses a hand-laid, vacuum-bagged hull infused with vinylester resin, with the deck hand laid and resin brushed into the weave. It's the build P&H recommends as their best all-rounder: capable on coastal touring, solid for general use on Canadian lakes and rivers, and tolerant of the occasional rock encounter.
